Jazz Guitarist and Vocalist

With a burning passion for music, Grace took her guitar overseas on a cultural exchange trip to China in 2018. She lead a group who used iconic New Zealand songs to teach Maori and English to kids in Lanzhou. This broadened her world view and by extension, her music.

The raw emotion in her live performances are unmatched. She has turned her life’s hardships into a beauty never heard before.

Currently studying music arts at Ara, teaching music to local kids and gigging whenever she can, music has overwhelmed Grace’s life and she’s loving it. Her songwriting is becoming heavily influenced by Jazz techniques and harmony because she cannot resist aspiring to be like the greats: Ella Fitzgerald, Norah Jones, Joe Pass and Billie Holiday.

After being prominent in festivals and events in her area, Grace is now looking to explore the more of what the Canterbury music scene has to offer.  Grace Empson embodies ‘60s jazz arriving on the modern music scene. She is the kiwi feminist who never let go of underground Jazz.
