Jakob Coleman
SMOOTH LIKE GRAVY
Jakob grew up in a music focused environment, listening to many different genres of music introduced to him by his Grandad, Dad and Uncle, exposing him to styles such as jazz, blues, rock, funk, Frank Zappa and more. His musical obsession started when he was 10 years old when he began guitar lessons provided by Glentunnel primary school. After that year Jakob started with Malvern School of Music for the following 6 years, continuing to develop his own unique style of playing. Jakob got his inspiration from other guitarists like Jeff Beck, Matteo Mancuso, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, George Benson, Joe Pass and his grandad. Jakob has recently started music school at Ara Institute of Canterbury full time, hoping to further develop his skills with his instrument. Over the past couple years, Jakob has started to expand his musical knowledge across multiple instruments like bass guitar and piano. Throughout high school, he started a band with a couple of his classmates in the schools music room, getting better mastering a kick ass repertoire and even entering into Rockquest, placing 2nd in the Canterbury region and top 30 in nationals. The first proper paying gig he played was at the Hororata domain for a Christmas event. From there it lead onto a gig at the Rangiora muscle car show, to eventually getting gigs all around Canterbury, giving Jakob more confidence to perform in front of large audiences.
