Born in Witzenhausen, Germany (2000), and in the year 2011 moved to New Zealand’s South Island, Joshua Derwahl grew up speaking German at home and English at school. Joshua discovered his passion for music through music class in primary education. At the age of nine he obtained his first instrument, the drums. Further along his school life an interest in jazz developed in his 10th year of high school, and since then he participated in various jazz bands and competitions. Joshua picked up guitar playing and singing during his high school years which he now prominently uses in his song writing.
Joshua found an interest in songwriting and recording in his gap year working at a boarding school in Germany. This was when his debut single ‘Lemons’ was released, a mellow acoustic song which musically explores the relationship between acoustic and electric guitar, while lyrically conveying the annoyance of bad habits.
Joshua takes advantage of his spare time by busking on the streets of Christchurch or by recording new songs to release under his solo project Plum Jam. As a performer Joshua has gained a lot of experience through busking and live gigs. He is still growing as a musician and expect improvement in all aspects of his music for the year 2020.
Now studying jazz (majoring in drums) at the renown Ara Institute of Canterbury Joshua finds himself with the opportunity to grow as a musician, collaborate with new upcoming artists and as a musician improve his creative output for you to enjoy.
Keep washing your hands!!
