Tim Sellars is a professional drummer and percussionist based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Tim began playing drums at the age of 14 and has never looked back with music being his absolute passion. It was in year 11 when he started jamming rock tunes with his friends that he realised this was going to be his life and dream job. In 2009, Tim graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Music (Majoring in Jazz performance on the drumset) and then completed his Honours (First Class) in 2011 (receiving the Michael Toovey prize for outstanding Merit). Most recently Tim completed his diploma in teaching and learning (secondary) and has started teaching at the ITM unit through Hagley College.

Tim plays many styles and gigs frequently around the city; most notably Jazz, pop, world, recording sessions, and musical theatre. He has played numerous shows with the Christchurch Symposium Big Band (different gigs featuring Roger Fox, Roger Manins, and US trombone player Francisco Torres). He has also played a total of 13 musical theatre shows for the companies Showbiz, Court Theatre, and the peforming arts school NASDA. Hairspray (with Showbiz) was his most recent show completed in June 2016. Tim can also be heard on many albums and sessions; including recordings with well known artists Ali Harper and Fiona Pears.

During Tims’ Honours study, world percussion became another strong focus. Middle Eastern, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuaban percussion instruments have enthused Tim and he has enjoyed experimenting with them in both traditional and fusion settings. Tim has his own band called Mukhlisa which is a blend of Middle-Eastern percussion (riq, darabuka, frame drum) and western harmony; with his current line up consisting of flute, double bass, and guitar

From 2012, Tim spent time at sea playing on Holland America Cruise Line ships (4 separate contracts). He did contracts both in the showbands and the Jazz trios which built up many skills and versatility that has been extremely beneficial to his playing. This type of gig allowed him to travel much of the world including Alsaka, Carribean, Northern Europe, East coast of Canada/US and Australia. Recently he has been doing smaller cruise contracts with a “skiffle” band called The Goldonies from Christchurch who were put together for the Court theatre summer season of One Man, Two Guvnors in 2014/2015.
